CPUC To Hold Public Forums To Consider Extension of PG&E’s Diablo Canyon
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will hold online public forums for the public to provide input about the potential extension of operations at Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.
WHAT: The public forums will begin with a brief overview of the proceeding. The CPUC will then take comments from the public. Contact information for at least one representative from PG&E will be provided to customers during the public forums for questions concerning individual service or billing issues.
WHEN: July 25, 2023, 2 p.m. AND 6 p.m. (virtual)
WHERE: Remote access via webcast or phone for both public forums:

- Participants who choose to participate via webcast will only have audio and video capabilities but will not be able to make verbal comments. If you would like to make a comment during the forum, the phone-in information is below.

BACKGROUND: On September 2, 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 846, which allows for the potential extension of operations at Diablo Canyon beyond the current retirement dates of up to five additional years under specific conditions. The first phase of the proceeding is divided into two tracks. Track 1 will consider the Diablo Canyon Independent Safety Committee funding issues. Track 2 will consider whether operations at Diablo Canyon should be extended. In addition, Track 2 will consider the development of extended operations cost recovery mechanisms and processes, whether and how to allocate the associated benefits of extended operations, and other related issues.
Diablo Canyon is located in coastal San Luis Obispo County and consists of two reactors that have been operating since 1985 (Unit 1) and 1986 (Unit 2) with a combined generation capacity of 2,240 megawatts. The Units are currently licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to operate until November 1, 2024 (Unit 1) and August 26, 2025 (Unit 2).
The CPUC welcomes attendance and comments at the public forums, as public comments help the CPUC reach an informed decision. The Administrative Law Judge assigned to the proceeding is scheduled to issue a Proposed Decision in the case for consideration by the CPUC by the end of 2023.
